The McCloud River Mercantile was one of the oldest company stores in California. Mercantile’s and Company Stores had many buzz phrase’s such as “If we don’t have it, you don’t need it”. The McCloud River Mercantile was no exception. It had many departments such as grocery, clothing, hardware and meat.
The store also kept track of what you spent during the month and removed it from your pay check. Everyone has heard the phrase “You owe your soul to the company store.”
The Mercantile was built in 1897 to supply the families of the company town of McCloud. The McCloud River Lumber Company took care of its employees and was effectionatly known as “Mother McCloud” to the employee’s.
